The DSO Formula and Your First Calculation

Start with the formula:

DSO = (Average Trade Receivables ÷ Revenue) × Number of Days in the Period

Gather the three inputs

Use trade receivables, not the entire current asset balance. This figure covers amounts customers owe for ordinary sales. Remove unrelated balances, including director loans, tax receivables, and other non-trade amounts.

Average the opening and closing receivables balances where possible:

Average Trade Receivables = (Opening Trade Receivables + Closing Trade Receivables) ÷ 2

Build a simple trend view
